Winter Learning Curve Part Deux

This was our view driving up Mt. Spokane yesterday. Hundred foot high pines, covered in snow. It was a GORGEOUS day, clear and sunny, with some snow just fallen the day before. It was our first time on the mountain. Jacob surprised me this week by setting up a private lesson for the two of us to learn how to Nordic or cross country ski! It was our Valentine's date, a day late, since we had sick kiddos and other things going on.

Our instructor, Dave, was awesome and so patient with these two rookies. He asked us what our skiing experience was and we both immediately answered, "Zero!" Ha! All we knew to start was how to snap in and out of our skis, and that was thanks to the lady at the rental place!

He showed us the "athletic stance" we would need and how to hold our poles. We worked on gliding and pumping our arms for momentum and stability...although I fell once or twice several times. Apparently, my balance isn't great, but it was a great workout and a wonderful time.

Mt. Spokane has specially groomed Nordic trails (we learned that the grooved snow is called "corduroy") with tracks to put your narrow skis into.

The views were amazing, and everyone on the trail was so friendly and courteous.

Our favorite part was when we came to the hills and you got to pump and coast down fast. I felt like a kid, cheering and having a ball. That was our first ski experience in the books. Next, we might try alpine! Look at us, becoming snow bunnies!
