A Lucky Boy

This is the face of a boy who loves his holidays. He had been practically counting down the days since Valentine's until it would be St. Patrick's Day. Not that it is a particularly big holiday. School isn't cancelled, there aren't any class parties. But because the kid calendar revolves around which holiday comes next, he was stoked. Almost daily, he would tell me that it was almost St. Patrick's Day.

Lucky for him, we do try to make even the smallest of holidays fun in some way. And lucky for me, this is a particularly low maintenance holiday.

The day before, I made some shamrock mint sugar cookies (just cuz we like sweets and I enjoy putting a twist on my recipes so that I can eat them, too). And before bed, Brendan set his trap for the leprechauns. It was a simple design. A cylinder of paper with a paper laying across the top, a cross cut in it for the leprechauns to fall through. Then he strategically placed a shamrock cookie on top as bait.

In the morning, the younger boys were eager to see what happened. As is tradition, the leprechauns did do some crazy things around the house, including creating this tower with the foam blocks. They also turned the toilet water green (a classic), turned pictures upside down, wrote a message in markers and then messed with Brendan's trap.

In place of the shamrock cookie (which had apparently been eaten) there was a box of Lucky Charms and a string coming out of the hole in the trap. The string went all around the house, zigging and zagging, wrapping around and through furniture...

eventually leading the boys to these Shamrock Seeds in a drawer in the spare room. They were for luck throughout their day.

Riley sported his shirt with green on it, and was an extremely cheerful boy that morning. Ah, to be little and enthusiastic about everything!
