O Brother, Where "Art" Thou? At the Art Museum.

Cheesy, I know. We went to the Toledo Museum of Art for the first time today. With Jake working a late afternoon/evening shift, it worked out for us to all go on a little outing to change things up and explore a bit more of the culture that is available to we Toledoans.

The museum is quite majestic, actually. Not far from so many dilapidated old buildings downtown, it is surrounded by a lush lawn and interesting sculptures.

The museum is free to the public (you just pay to park), and we went to check out the Family Center we'd heard so much about. Apparently, they have art activities for children on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It ended up being a really pleasant experience. All the boys created some interesting art pieces.

Caleb did some Japanese printmaking called Gyotaku, which translates into "fish slapping". So, slap some paint on the fish and then slap it on the paper. he he

Everyone enjoyed painting with the easels.

There was also a really fun playroom for the younger set, which Riley really enjoyed.

We were able to take a turn around a few of the art galleries while we let the boys' art dry a bit. I am a sucker for Renaissance art, so that is where we went. :) Caleb and Brendan did not appreciate all the "naked babies" (aka cherubim), but found the other paintings and sculptures interesting. They were quite flabbergasted, though, when we discovered some Greek wrestlers in sculpture and discovered that the first Olympics were held in the nude. Ah, well. They had to find out sooner or later. Jake and I were pleasantly surprised to find out that the museum currently houses some Monet pieces. Very nice.

After collecting the boys' artwork, we went out to enjoy our picnic lunch. It was an absolutely gorgeous day. I was so grateful that we were able to steal some time together as a family. It was an added bonus that it was something a little more educational, yet fun for everyone. Yay!
