Hummingbird, Birthday, Eclipse, Memorial Day

Can you say free association? That's how jumbled and disconnected the month of May felt. There has been so much going on wrapping up school for the boys, a number of photo shoots, my calling keeping me busy and life on top of it all. So, for the sake of brevity while attempting to keep some sort of a record...here we go.

We have hummingbirds. By no effort of our own, there were a number of hummingbirds hanging out in our front yard and before long, we noticed a tiny, furry nest the size of a ping pong ball in a flimsy hanging branch of our tree.

The two tiny eggs looked like little white jelly beans. The mother hummingbird would fly around overhead during the day - I know this because whenever I went to peek into the nest, she would actually squeak at me. Did you know that hummingbirds squeak? At night, she would sit still as a statue on her little nest. It was so bizarre to see a hummingbird so still. She would stare at us with her black eyes. Silent, but vigilant.

We checked that nest as often as we could, but before we knew it it was suddenly empty! Somehow we had missed the babies being born and flying away. It must have happened fast because we checked back every couple of days. Bummer. Maybe they'll reuse the nest next year and we can try again.

Grandma Jerdon came into town for a few days with Aunt Florence, and we were able to celebrate Grandma's birthday with her! We decorated and tried to make her feel special with an English meat pie for dinner and a yummy chocolate birthday cake. Jake texted the family that he was holding Grandma ransom enless they met his demands, which gave Grandma a giggle. Grandpa Jerdon who was back in Apple Valley called right away to know what was going on. Silly Jerdon men!

During Grandma's birthday dinner, we had to run outside to check on the solar eclipse that was going on at the same time! Apparently, that type of eclipse only occurs rarely, so we wanted to be sure and have the boys check it out. Brendan held his little cardboard sheet with a hole in it, and we could see the sun being covered by the moon. Really fascinating! I really enjoy astronomy. Someday we'd love to get a really nice telescope to look at the night sky.

Memorial Day snuck right up on us, and even though Jake had the three-day weekend off, we didn't have a thing planned. That's how we roll these days. We fly by the seat of our pants since we never seem to know week to week what's going to happen around here.

Luckily, a holiday plan came together. We had a picnic in one of the new parks nearby and went geo-caching. It was the biggest cache we'd ever found, and the boys got a really cool wooden tic tac toe game out of it. We left a fun sticky lizard. I also managed to burn myself because I forgot the sunscreen. So stupid! This whiteness can't handle the Vegas sun.

Later on, we went over to swim at our friends' house.

We love the Leavitts. :) The Nelson family also came, and we enjoyed a yummy barbecue. The kids had a total blast, and Riley was loving the water. He has absolutely no fear. I had to watch him like a hawk. It was a lot of fun, though. It's great to have family when we aren't near family. Summer, here we come!
