FHE Spotlight Goes Up a Notch

Since our first Vegas visit with the boys when we saw an awesome slight-of-hand magician up close, Caleb has been fascinated with magic. And who wouldn't be? I have many memories of sitting right up to the television screen as a child watching intently those television magic programs where famous, and often not so famous magicians would do things like make entire trains disappear or have the audience pick a number just to incredibly guess it! How DO they do it?!?
So, for Caleb's birthday last month, we thought it would be cool to get him a couple of his first magic tricks. Before we left Eugene, we paid a visit to their little downtown hobby shop and found a disappearing coin trick and another trick where the magician miraculously changes one large black cube right before your eyes, into many little colored cubes.
After a couple brief training sessions behind closed doors with Daddy (these things MUST be kept top secret), Caleb was ready to start performing for the family. He was so adorable, bowing at the end and everything. When we went down to see family in California for Uncle Ben's wedding, he brought his tricks along to dazzle and amaze Nana and Papa. I think they were all pretty impressed.
Just an ordinary quarter...

Into the magic box...

Gone!

Then yesterday, Jake decided to steal some time away from studying to play with us. He took us all over to the New York, New York's little magic shop, Houdini's Magic. I have to say that I was pretty impressed from the very beginning. Althought, it's not much more than a hole in the wall, they have live magic demonstrations. A guy with his long blonde hair strung back in a ponytail, complete with a headset mic and a white shirt and black waistcoat seriously blew our minds with some of his tricks. One in particular (which Jake wants to go back for one of these days) was called the UFO trick. The magician could literally take any small object (he used a quarter from Jake's pocket) and make it float up into his hand, around his hands, around his entire body!!! It was absolutely incredible. He was joking around the whole time, too, saying that if you got pulled over, you could do it with your license and then the policeman would have to give HIMSELF a breathalizer test. he he

The shop was full of funny gags and tricks both simple and extreme. The other interesting thing was that whenever you purchase a magic trick, they took the budding magician into their "secret room" (there was a hidden door in one of the bookcases) and showed them how to do their trick. So, you left with the knowledge of how to pull it off right away!

By the time we left the shop, Caleb had found a fun ball trick to spend his saved up money on. He went back into the secret room briefly for his training, too (the door was left a bit open, of course - wouldn't want any weirdos doing weird stuff in there, right?). He's been so cute, trying them out on us ever since. I have a feeling that tonight's family home evening spotlight will be a good one.

Looks like fun. Caleb will be the popular kid at school because he'll be able to do all sorts of cool tricks.

You'll have to videotape one and post it for us to be amazed by his talents!
